A common understanding of Hinduism equates it with the system of Advaita Vedanta, popularized by Shankara during the Middle Ages and advocated powerfully by Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan in more recent times.2O Coming from a somewhat different orientation, the popular sage Sri Aurobindo held a similar attitude on the nature of evil as the one stemming from the Vedantic tradition.21 The point that all of them stress is that evil is ultimately an illusion we succumb to by a habit of forgetfulness. Specifically, we do not remember that there is only one true reality (Brahman, found in our deepest self, the Atman) and that everything else that we may think of as real is actually maya, which in this context means downright illusion. Thus, the sooner we can liberate ourselves from this ignorance (avidya), the sooner we can live without feeling tormented by the illusion of evil and suffering. "Pain is less a fact than a matter of perspective," Frederic Spiegelberg summarizes.22 Radhakrishnan emphasizes that it takes hard discipline to come to see our existence in a new light.
